ALA
AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION. The national professional association for librarians. The organization includes many divisions and roundtables such as the Public Library Association and the Intellectual Freedom Roundtable

 AUDIOVISUAL. An umbrella term for audio and video recordings.

CD-ROM COMPACT DISK/READ-ONLY MEMORY or CD-ROM
a storage method in which an optical disk is used to hold enormous amounts of data. The disk can then be “read” by a microcomputer equipped with search software and an optical disk drive. Unlike a microcomputer disk, the microcomputer can only read data from the optical disk; it cannot put any new information on the disk.

CE
CONTINUING EDUCATION. An umbrella term for workshops and seminars.


ESG
EXTENDED SERVICE GRANTS. Money provided annually by library systems to member libraries in the taxing counties to help defray the cost of serving patrons from rural areas.


E-RATE

is a federal program for providing subsidies to schools and Libraries for telecommunication access and service. The funds for the Program is from assessments made to telephone companies.


FOKL

FRIENDS OF KANSAS LIBRARIES. The state organization for library Friends groups.


FOLUSA

FRIENDS OF LIBRARIES USA. The national organization for library Friends groups.


ILL

INTERLIBRARY LOAN. The method by which one library borrows materials from another, either within the library system, or from libraries around the state and nation.


ISBN

INTERNATIONAL STANDARD BOOK NUMBER.This number appears in most published materials, is supposed to be unique to that title and is frequently required when ordering a book.


ISP
INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER

ISSN/P or INTERNATIONAL STANDARD SERIAL NUMBER
Is an eight-digit identifier of reference for serial publications/magazines.

KAN-ED
Kan-ed is a program created by the Kansas Legislature and administered through the Kansas Board of Regents. The purpose of the program is to expand the collaboration capabilities of Kan-ed’s member institutions, specifically K-12 schools, higher education, libraries and hospitals.

Kansas State Department of Education in Topeka

LC
LIBRARY OF CONGRESS. The national library for the United States of America.

LSTA
LIBRARY SERVICES AND TECHNOLOGY ACT. The major source of federal funds for library grants. It is administered through the State Library of Kansas.

MARC
MACHINE READABLE CATALOGING. A standard for computerized cataloging records for automated library systems.

MLS
MASTERS DEGREE IN LIBRARY SCIENCE. An advanced degree for librarians.

MPLA
MOUNTAIN PLAINS LIBRARY ASSOCIATION. An association of libraries in the western part of the US that share continuing education programs.

NEH
NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES. Funded by the Congress, this is the source of funds for programming in the humanities. Most of the funds are allotted to the Kansas Humanities Council for distribution in the state.

NLW
NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK. A week in April that celebrates the contributions of libraries and librarians, and promotes library use and support.

OCLC
ON-LINE COMPUTER LIBRARY CENTER. An international computerized database that contains the holdings of over 45,000 libraries. It is the database used by NCKL to catalog material and to get computer records for the database used by the KLC.

OVERDRIVE AUDIO BOOKS AND MORE
A cooperative project to provide downloadable audio books to all Kansas residents.

PLA
PUBLIC LIBRARY ASSOCIATION. A division of ALA which focuses on public libraries.

State Library Advisory Commission

SLIM
SCHOOL OF LIBRARY AND INFORMATION MANAGEMENT. The library school at Emporia.

SLK
STATE LIBRARY OF KANSAS

SRP SUMMER READING PROGRAM
An umbrella term for the activities and programs which occur at public libraries for children during the summer.
